Juried by Berekely-based Roula Seikaly, Senior Editor at Humble Arts Foundation, this group exhibition of photographs explores work that demonstrates portraiture as an expansive genre, not one strictly defined by the presence of a human subject.
The show explores portraiture, a foundational photographic genre. Portraits are a means of defining ourselves visually. Yet the photographs in this show engage with the question of how we define ourselves beyond our physical presence? Can the definition of portrait expand to include what lies beyond our physicality to include passions, fears, places we live, the car we drive, the food we eat? Can photography convey who we are without including the human form?
This work is on view in Axis’s East Gallery throughout March and April. Work by photographer Doug Dertinger will be on view in the Main Gallery throughout April.
